Spike's Grow School
Spike the Cactus
G'day, I'm Spike
I'm the resident cactus at Hydro Oasis Grow School, which means I'm the one who writes the lessons. I'm also, as you have probably worked out, not a real bloke. I'm the voice we put the Grow School in, because "Hydro Oasis Content Team" sounds like a committee, and nobody ever learned to buffer coco from a committee.
What sits behind me is a hydroponics shop in Youngtown, Tasmania, and the growing knowledge that comes with running one. Grow School is that knowledge written down properly: long, specific, and free, whether you buy anything from us or not.
If a medium has a downside, the lesson says so. If something works but is a pain to live with, that gets said too. You only need to catch a shop overselling once to stop believing the rest of it, so we would rather tell you the annoying bit up front.
The honest picture
I don't do sales pitches dressed up as facts, so let's talk about the pictures.
I'm a cactus. No hands, no camera, no keyboard, and I don't get out much.
The diagrams are drawn in code. Schematics: what connects to what, which way the water moves. Not to scale, and not built from manufacturer specs, so measure your own gear before you cut anything.
The photos are real photographs, of real products and of the shop in Youngtown. A few pictures pull several of those photos together, laid out and labelled. Some scenes (a hand holding clay pebbles, someone lifting a raft of lettuce) come from an AI image model, meant to be generic rather than any particular product.
Nothing goes up without a person reading the words and looking at the picture first.
If you want a straight answer
The lessons are put together with AI help and checked by a person at the shop before they go anywhere near the website.
The cactus is a character. The checking is not.
If something here is wrong, tell us and we will fix it. That goes for a typo or a number.
Our standard
Grow School is built around a clear standard: detailed, technically accurate growing information grounded in published evidence.
The owner of Hydro Oasis has invested considerable time in designing and refining the AI workflow behind Grow School. Developed in-house, it places research quality, source verification and technical accuracy at the centre of the process.
Research starts with peer-reviewed papers, scientific studies and published trials, supported by technical publications from relevant industry bodies and manufacturers' own documentation. These sources form the foundation of the lessons, rather than being added afterwards to give the writing an appearance of credibility.
Citation verification covers both the accuracy of the reference and its direct support for the claim being made. Sources are opened and read against the text, with figures, terminology and conclusions checked against the original material. The standard is not simply a relevant citation, but a faithful account of what the evidence actually establishes.
That precision extends to how the information is presented. Research findings should retain their context, qualifications and limitations. Recommendations should be proportionate to the evidence behind them. Making a lesson easier to understand should never mean making its claims broader or more certain than the research supports.
Some lessons have been through several separate verification passes, each starting afresh against the original source material rather than relying on an earlier assessment. Technical accuracy, citation accuracy and clear communication all matter; none is a substitute for the others.
The owner reads every lesson himself before publication, checking the accuracy of the information and the quality of the writing. The finished lesson needs to be useful, technically sound and worth reading, not generic AI-generated filler. Nothing gets published until he has reviewed and approved it.
The sources are published alongside the lessons rather than kept in-house. Most finish with a References block, and between them the 23 published lessons carry 49 DOI links, so the evidence behind a claim can be opened and read by anyone.
