Bluelab Combo Meter
The Bluelab Combo Meter is a three-in-one handheld meter that measures pH, conductivity and temperature, which together govern how well plants take up nutrients. Conductivity shows how much nutrient is in a solution. pH decides how much of that nutrient the roots can absorb. Temperature influences growth rate and plant structure. Because all three sit in one compact, battery-powered unit, you can check a nutrient reservoir, a run-off sample or the water supply in one pass, wherever it sits. The meter comes two ways: with the standard Bluelab pH Probe for testing solutions, or with the Bluelab Leap pH Probe for taking pH directly from the root zone in soil and other substrates.
Each measurement has its own probe, and that is where much of the meter's long-term value comes from. The conductivity/temperature probe is calibrated at the factory and never needs calibrating, so it is ready to use straight away and only needs regular cleaning. The pH probe attaches through a BNC fitting with a quarter turn. When it reaches the end of its working life, you replace only the probe, not the whole meter. pH calibration uses two points: pH 7.0 first, then pH 4.0 when readings are expected below neutral or pH 10.0 when they are expected above it. The meter tracks the time since the last calibration and prompts a recalibration after 30 days, which takes much of the guesswork out of keeping pH readings accurate. Conductivity can be shown on several common scales and temperature in Celsius or Fahrenheit, so readings match whatever units a feed chart uses. A bright backlit display keeps the numbers easy to read. The meter runs on two AAA alkaline batteries and switches itself off after four minutes without a button press.
The standard version suits testing liquids such as reservoirs, run-off and source water. Its pH probe comes with a holder with a suction cup and is stored in a cap filled with KCl storage solution, which keeps the glass hydrated. Its BNC connection also accepts the Bluelab Soil pH Probe, so root-zone readings can be added later. The soil version pairs the same meter with the Leap pH Probe and a dibber, so pH can be taken in the substrate itself as well as in solutions. The Leap probe arrives safely stored and ready to start measuring straight away. Both versions include single-use pH 7.0 and pH 4.0 calibration solutions and KCl storage solution. The meter carries a 5-year limited warranty from the date of purchase for the original purchaser, with proof of purchase required. It is not waterproof, though it withstands occasional splashes, so wipe it dry promptly and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the display.
To keep readings accurate over the long run, clean the conductivity probe at least once a month and rinse both probes in fresh tap water after each use. Keep the pH probe tip wet, and never rinse or soak it in RO, deionised or distilled water, because that damages the chemistry of the glass bulb.

Directions for Use

Use
- Slide the back cover down, insert 2 x AAA alkaline batteries as shown on the battery holder, then slide the cover back on. Do not use rechargeable batteries.
- Connect the pH probe by lining up the BNC fitting lugs and twisting one quarter turn to fasten it securely.
- Calibrate the pH before using the meter for the first time.
- For the standard pH probe (pH Probe Liquid), press any button to turn the meter on, then loosen the storage cap by twisting its base clockwise one rotation and slide the cap off without fully detaching the base. Rinse the probe tip in fresh water. Before later calibrations, clean the probe tip first (this is not needed before first use).
- With the probe tip in pH 7.0 calibration solution, press and hold the CAL button until 'CAL' appears, then release and wait for the flashing display to settle on PH7.
- Rinse the probe tip in fresh water, place it in the second solution and repeat the CAL button press, waiting for the display to settle on PH4 or PH10. Use pH 4.0 if readings below pH 7.0 are expected, or pH 10.0 if readings above pH 7.0 are expected.
- Complete the second calibration point within one hour of the first, or the calibration indicators disappear and the meter reverts to an uncalibrated state. If 'Err' appears, the calibration has failed: the display reverts to the previous reading and the probe must be recalibrated.
- After calibrating, rinse the probe tip in fresh water and store it in the cap with enough Bluelab pH Probe KCl Storage Solution to submerge the tip.
- To read conductivity, short press the 'nutrient/units' button and insert the conductivity/temperature probe where the solution is moving strongly, or stir with the probe. Wait 1-2 minutes for the reading to stabilise.
- To read temperature, short press the 'temp/units' button, insert the probe and wait 1-2 minutes for the reading to stabilise (4-5 minutes in very hot or cold solutions).
- To read pH, short press the 'pH/calibrate' button, remove the probe storage cap, place the probe in the solution and wait 1-2 minutes for the reading to stabilise. When taking several readings, rinse the pH probe tip thoroughly in fresh water between solutions to avoid cross-contamination.
- To change the displayed nutrient or temperature unit, press and hold the relevant button until the display flashes, then release. Short press the same button to scroll through the units and release on the one required.
- Recalibrate the pH 30 days after the last calibration (the meter notifies you and the successful calibration indicator disappears), after more than 30 readings, when a reading is not what you expected, when the meter is reset after an error message, after replacing the batteries, and when the probe or meter is new.
- Clean the conductivity probe at least once a month. Warm the shroud in your hand briefly, hold the probe body and pull the shroud off. Place one or two drops of Bluelab Conductivity Probe Cleaner on the probe face and rub firmly with a soft chamois or finger.
- Rinse all cleaner off under running tap water while scrubbing with the chamois or finger, until the probe face holds a smooth, even film of water rather than beads. Repeat the clean and rinse if beads remain.
- Refit the shroud and test the probe in 2.77 EC standard solution. Clean it again if the reading is outside +/-0.1 EC.
- Keep the shroud on the conductivity probe at all times except when cleaning, avoid touching the probe face with your fingers, and rinse the probe head in fresh tap water after each use.
- To clean the standard pH probe, remove the storage cap and rinse the tip under fresh tap water. Gently stir the tip in a small container of clean tap water with a little Bluelab pH Probe Cleaner or mild dishwashing detergent, taking care not to knock it against the container. For heavy contamination, gently brush around the glassware with a few drops of cleaner or mild detergent and a soft toothbrush. Rinse off all traces of detergent under fresh running water, then recalibrate.
- If the standard pH probe tip has dried out, or the probe has not always been stored in KCl solution, clean it, then stand it upright in a plastic container with the tip submerged in Bluelab pH Probe KCl Storage Solution for at least 24 hours. Calibrate it after hydrating.
Safety
Never use RO, deionised or distilled water on the pH probe, as it damages the chemistry of the glass bulb.
Do not use or store outside the 0 - 50 °C (32 - 122 °F) operating environment.
The meter is not waterproof but withstands occasional splashes. Wipe it dry as soon as possible if it gets splashed.
Store the meter in a cool, dry, clean place out of direct sunlight to avoid damaging the LCD display.
Remove the batteries if storing the meter for a long period. Remove the pH probe if the meter will not be used for more than two to three weeks, and check regularly that the probe tip has not dried out.
Check the batteries at least once every six months for deterioration, rusting or swelling, and replace them when the low battery indicator appears.
