Bluelab Soil pH Meter
The Bluelab Soil pH Meter is a compact handheld meter that gives fast, accurate pH readings directly in the root zone. Its toughened spear-tip probe goes straight into soil, coco coir, rockwool or potting mix, and the same probe reads nutrient solution. pH decides how available each nutrient is to the roots, so a reading taken where the roots actually sit tells you when an adjustment is needed to keep feeding on track. It is just as handy for quick spot checks around a greenhouse as it is for the root zone of a single prized plant.
Most of the work happens in the probe. Its reinforced spear tip is built to be pushed into growing media, and a long cable connects it to the handheld unit, so the meter stays in your hand while the probe works in awkward, hard-to-reach spots. Between readings the probe sits in a cap filled with KCl storage solution, which keeps the sensing tip hydrated and ready for the next test. Calibration is a two-point process run from a single button. pH 7.0 always comes first, then pH 4.0 or pH 10.0, depending on which side of neutral the readings are expected to fall. A successful calibration places an indicator on the bright backlit display, and when that indicator disappears it is time to recalibrate, so the meter itself flags when its accuracy needs refreshing. Power comes from a pair of AAA alkaline batteries.
Soil readings reward a little patience. A reading can take up to four minutes to settle to a constant value. Outside of solution, rockwool and small, shallow pots, clear the top layer of soil before measuring, and moisten dry media with a little distilled water. In coarse soil, the included dibber opens a path first so the probe makes proper contact. Readings from several locations, averaged, give a representative figure for a bed or container. After each test, wash the tip under running tap water rather than distilled water and return it to its cap. The meter is not waterproof, though it tolerates the occasional splash if it is wiped dry promptly.
The meter carries a 5-year limited warranty, while the probe is covered for 6 months. A replacement Bluelab Soil pH Probe is sold separately, so the meter can stay in service beyond its first probe. The in-box manual uses the international names for the same parts: the meter appears as the Bluelab Multimedia pH Meter and the probe as the Bluelab Leap pH Probe.

Directions for Use

Use
- Before first use, the probe tip only needs cleaning if it has been preconditioned in media.
- To calibrate, press any button to turn the meter on, twist and slide off the probe cap, rinse the probe tip in fresh water and place it in pH 7.0 calibration solution.
- Press and hold the CAL button until CAL appears on screen, then release. Wait for the flashing indicator to finish and PH7 to display.
- Rinse the probe tip in fresh water and place it in pH 4.0 or pH 10.0 solution, depending on which direction readings are expected to fall.
- Press and hold the CAL button until CAL appears, release, and wait for the flashing indicator to finish and pH 4 or pH 10 to display.
- Rinse the probe tip in fresh water. The successful calibration indicator appears on screen; recalibrate when it disappears after 30 days.
- To measure outside of solution, rockwool or small, shallow pots, remove the top 5 cm (2 in) of the sample area first, and moisten dry soil or media with a small amount of distilled water.
- Turn the meter on, remove the storage cap and insert the probe into the grow media. In coarse soil, use the dibber first and make sure the probe is in contact with the soil.
- Wait for the reading to stabilise to a constant value, which can take up to four minutes, then record it.
- Remove the probe and wash the tip under fresh running tap water (not distilled) to remove any soil residue.
- Repeat in different locations and average the readings, storing the probe between measurements.
- To clean the probe, rinse the tip under fresh tap water, then gently stir it in a small container of clean tap water with a little Bluelab pH Probe Cleaner or mild dishwashing detergent, without knocking it against the container.
- For heavy contamination, gently brush around the glass, never touching the glass itself, with a soft toothbrush and a few drops of cleaner or mild detergent.
- Rinse thoroughly under fresh running tap water to remove all traces of detergent, then recalibrate.
Safety
Store the probe in its cap with enough Bluelab pH Probe KCl Storage Solution to fully submerge the tip. Never use RO, distilled or deionised water for storage.
Store the meter in a cool, dry, clean place out of direct sunlight. It is not waterproof, so wipe it dry promptly if it is splashed.
Remove the batteries if the meter will be stored for a prolonged period, and remove the probe if the meter will sit unused for more than two to three weeks, checking periodically that the probe tip has not dried out.
Do not use or store the meter outside 0 - 50 °C (32 - 122 °F).
