Bluelab Truncheon
The Bluelab Truncheon is a long, rugged handheld meter for checking the nutrient strength of a feed solution. Dip it in and a column of bright lights shows the conductivity of the solution, so a grower can mix to strength, top up and re-check without guesswork or fiddly setup. It needs no calibration and is built for wet work around a reservoir. Two versions share the same design. Bluelab recommend the Standard model for home growers and the Commercial model for commercial growers. The Commercial model's larger scale suits hydroponic setups that need stronger nutrient solutions during certain growth stages.
Measuring conductivity is the simplest way to track how much nutrient is in a solution. Dissolved nutrient salts let electricity move through the water, so the conductivity rises as more nutrient goes in. The Truncheon reads on every common scale: EC, CF, ppm 500 (TDS) and ppm 700. It also compensates automatically for the temperature of the solution, so warm and cool batches are compared fairly. It leaves the factory calibrated and needs no calibration from the grower. It detects liquid automatically and shows the result on a scale of bright LEDs. Where the lights dance between two values, the true reading sits between them. The long-format body is designed for mixing and measuring at the same time. In very cold or very hot conditions, stirring the solution with the probe also helps it reach the temperature of the solution sooner.
Owning a Truncheon is mostly about keeping the probe clean. Bluelab's care guide calls for a clean at least once a fortnight, and more often with heavy use, using one or two drops of an unscented liquid scourer. The white shroud should stay fitted except during cleaning, because readings are incorrect without it. If readings run consistently low, clean the probe first. Power comes from three AA standard or alkaline batteries. Rechargeable batteries are not suitable, and the battery cap must sit fully flush to keep the meter waterproof. Both versions carry a five-year Bluelab warranty for the original purchaser, with proof of purchase. To choose between them, compare the strongest feed you mix against the Standard model's ceiling. If your feeds run above it, the Commercial model carries the same design on to a larger scale.

Directions for Use

Use
- Place the probe in the nutrient solution and read the value shown by the lights. If the lights dance between two values, the true reading sits between them.
- In very cold or very hot conditions, allow 1-2 minutes for the probe to reach the temperature of the solution. To shorten the wait, place the probe where the solution is moving strongly, or stir the solution with the probe.
- To take another reading, place the probe back in the solution.
- If the meter turns off before a reading is taken, remove it from the solution for 3-5 seconds, then dip it again.
- Rinse the probe head in fresh tap water after each use. Keep the white shroud fitted at all times except when cleaning, because readings will be incorrect without it.
- Clean the probe at least once every two weeks, and more often with heavy use. Twist the shroud 90 degrees and remove it, apply one or two drops of an unscented liquid scourer such as Jif or Cif to the probe face, then rub firmly with a finger.
- Rinse all the cleaner off under running water. The water should form a film on the probe face with no beading. If beading remains, repeat the clean, then refit the shroud.
- After cleaning, test the probe in a known conductivity standard solution.
- If the meter does not light up when dipped, clean the probe, and replace the batteries if that does not fix it. If it gives low readings, clean the probe using only an unscented cleaner.
- To replace the batteries, unfasten the battery cap and remove the old batteries. Check the contacts and batteries for corrosion, and if you find any, clean the contacts first.
- Fit three new AA standard or alkaline batteries positive (+) end down. Never use rechargeable batteries, never mix brands or old with new batteries, and never fit them inverted.
- Refasten the battery cap fully flush with no gap to keep the meter waterproof.
