Bugs for Bugs Banana Weevil Borer Funnel Trap Kit provides a ground-level trapping system for monitoring and mass trapping banana weevil borer. An aggregation pheromone draws the pest into a cardboard tube through inverted plastic funnels. The ramps are intended to give approaching weevils access whichever way the assembled trap lands on the plantation floor.
Unlike a water-filled pitfall arrangement, this design does not need water or digging into the soil. The tube carries a weather-protective label, and the plastic funnels can be reused until lost or worn. Replacement tubes and pheromone lures are available separately, so ongoing servicing need not mean replacing every part of the trap.
This is a sustained monitoring and trapping approach. The design is still in a research and development phase, and a dramatic, immediate reduction in pest numbers should not be expected. Continuous trapping is intended to reduce numbers over time as part of banana pest management, with the traps maintained throughout the year.
The kit is supplied with a pheromone lure for each trap. Keep unused lures frozen, insert a lure before placing a trap in the field and renew it after 3 months in the field. Tape at the tube-to-funnel joins adds extra weather sealing. Counts and condition still need attention during deployment, especially where a worn cardboard tube could compromise the assembled trap.

Application Rate
- Bananas: 10 traps per hectare, up to 20 per hectare for heavy infestations.
Application
- Remove one funnel end, insert the pheromone lure and refit before placing the trap on the plantation floor.
- Maintain the traps throughout the year. Replace the pheromone lures after 3 months in the field.
- For extra weather sealing, add insulation tape where each funnel meets the cardboard tube.
Safety
