Bugs for Bugs Fly Parasitoid Wasp Mix
Bugs for Bugs Fly Parasitoid Wasp Mix targets house flies and stable flies during the pupal stage, helping interrupt the next generation before adults emerge. The mix contains Spalangia endius, Muscidifurax raptor and Nasonia vitripennis, tiny wasps used around nuisance-fly breeding sites. It is intended for settings such as horse studs, poultry farms, piggeries and feedlots, as part of a programme that also reduces the places where flies breed.
Female wasps place their eggs into immature fly pupae. The developing wasp feeds on its host and kills it, then a new adult emerges from the fly's pupal case to continue the cycle. The supplied material consists of parasitised fly pupae mixed with vermiculite. It is therefore working on future fly numbers, rather than knocking down the adult flies already moving around animals and buildings. Visible improvement can take several weeks, which makes early and repeated releases more useful than waiting for an outbreak to become severe.
Release units keep the material close to suitable breeding sites along fence lines, drains, spilt feed or undisturbed manure. In stables and other indoor environments, the pupae can also be distributed around pens and feeding troughs. Good sanitation remains essential: removing fly-breeding material, managing vegetation and monitoring pest activity all help the biological programme work. Regular releases from spring through autumn build overlapping wasp generations while conditions remain suitable.
These insects have their own handling requirements. They should be released promptly, and refrigeration is specifically unsuitable for this mix. Emergence can be spread over time, so a quiet-looking pack does not necessarily mean that the process is complete. The live pupae and the nonliving release units are separate products; a release unit is not included with these pupal packs.
NOTE: Biosecurity restrictions currently prevent this product from being sent to Tasmania.
NOTE: These are living insects with a short shelf life, so we don't hold them in store. Your order ships fresh, direct from the breeder.

Directions for Use
expand_more
Application Rate
- Large animals such as cows and horses: 100 - 500 wasps per animal per fortnight.
- Medium animals such as pigs: 40 - 100 wasps per animal per fortnight.
- Small animal husbandry such as poultry: 2 - 5 wasps per animal per fortnight.
Application
- Begin early in the season, before fly numbers become difficult to manage, and make regular releases from spring through autumn until cold weather prevails.
- Transfer the pupae into separate parasite release units and hang them close to fly-breeding sites such as drains, spilt feed, silage pits or undisturbed manure.
- Maintain good sanitation, regularly remove fly-breeding material and manage vegetation around animal areas.
- Monitor fly numbers and parasitoid establishment.
- Horse stables and other indoor environments: the pupae may be sprinkled around pens and feeding troughs.
- Allow time for results: these wasps attack pupae rather than existing adult flies, so reduced adult numbers may not be noticeable for several weeks.
- Wasps may take up to 2 weeks to begin emerging; emergence can then continue for a further 2 weeks.
Safety
Check chemical history and pesticide side-effects before release. Most insecticides used against adult flies are toxic to these parasitoid wasps.
Release as soon as possible after delivery. If adverse weather prevents release, keep the packs for several days in a dark room at 15 - 20 °C. Do not refrigerate.
