Bugs for Bugs MAT Cups
Bugs for Bugs MAT Cups add a targeted male-fruit-fly treatment to an orchard management programme. Each cup carries cue lure and maldison, combining a male attractant with a toxicant for Queensland fruit fly. The cups draw males to feed on the treated material, complementing protein baiting aimed at adult flies seeking food.
MAT stands for male annihilation technique. It works best across large areas or whole cropping regions, where repeated seasonal applications reduce the local male population over successive seasons. It is one part of a systems approach, alongside protein baiting, crop monitoring and sanitation. Protein baiting remains necessary; MAT cups are an addition to that work rather than a substitute for it.
Two housing styles are available. The plastic version contains an impregnated cotton wick, while the cardboard version uses an impregnated corrugated-cardboard inner. Both shelter the ingredients from rain and ultraviolet degradation. The cardboard design is biodegradable, with the same role in a seasonal male-annihilation programme.
Regular applications through spring, summer and autumn maintain the programme while older cups remain in the field for their specified period. Local fruit fly pressure and the sensitivity of the crop determine the application rate. This is an orchard or area-wide tool, so the placement plan needs to cover the treated area as a whole.
NOTE: MAT cups compete with male monitoring traps and can alter their catches. Read trap results as population trends alongside crop inspections; a lower male trap count alone does not establish that fruit is protected. These cups contain insecticide.
