Bugs for Bugs Typhlodromips montdorensis
Bugs for Bugs Typhlodromips montdorensis introduces an Australian predatory mite for early management of thrips and whitefly. Montdorensis feeds on eggs and juvenile pest stages, and can also use pollen and honeydew. That makes it particularly useful for preventative releases in flowering crops, where alternative food helps support a predator population before pest pressure becomes heavy.
The mites search sheltered areas of leaves and flowers for prey, laying their own eggs on leaf hairs and in other protected places. Their role is to work on developing pest populations, rather than immediately remove every adult flying insect. Sticky traps remain useful for detecting adult thrips and whitefly, while close crop inspections help track the immature stages and the establishment of predators. Other biological agents can complement this work by feeding on adult thrips, soil pupae or particular whitefly species.
Montdorensis is used in protected vegetables, strawberries, cut flowers and indoor plants, with outdoor use possible where conditions remain suitably warm. It prefers a sheltered, well-watered crop environment with enough humidity to support egg hatch. Pollen-bearing plants and appropriate supplementary pollen can help maintain the population when prey is scarce. Cold conditions reduce activity, so matching the organism to the crop environment is an important part of planning a release.
The tubes provide loose mites in vermiculite for distribution over foliage, preferably close to flowers and pest hotspots. Gently mixing the material before application helps spread the predators through the carrier. After release, mark a few locations for repeat inspection and look for predator eggs as well as changing pest numbers. Establishment takes time, and repeated modest releases may be more useful than one large introduction. Check the history and side-effects of pesticides before release, then handle the living tubes promptly and use their specific short-term storage conditions if a delay is unavoidable.
NOTE: These are living mites with a short shelf life, so we don't hold them in store. Your order ships fresh, direct from the breeder.

Application Rate
- Preventative thrips and whitefly management: 10 - 25 mites per m² per release; make 3 releases at 2 week intervals.
- Curative treatment: 50 - 100 mites per m² per release, repeated as required at 1 - 2 week intervals.
- Hotspot treatment: 100 - 200 mites per m² per release, repeated as required at 1 - 2 week intervals.
Application
- Introduce early in the crop and pest cycle, preventatively from flowering where pollen is abundant or at the first signs of thrips or whitefly.
- Gently roll the tube to distribute the mites. Remove the cap and breathable cloth, replace the cap as a shaker and spread the contents over foliage, preferably near flowers, adding extra mites to hotspots.
- Mark release sites and inspect regularly for pests, predators and predator eggs.
- Rates are guides and depend on the crop and infestation.
- Maintain healthy, well-watered plants, minimise dust and support suitable humidity; relative humidity of at least 70% is needed for high egg hatch.
- Use pollen-bearing companion plants or suitable supplementary pollen to help maintain the predators when prey numbers are low.
- Preferred crop temperature is 20 - 30 °C. Activity ceases below 11 °C, and outdoor use is unsuitable where temperatures remain below 10 °C for extended periods.
- Adults may tolerate extreme greenhouse heat that eggs and young stages cannot.
Safety
Check pesticide history and side-effects before release. Avoid pesticides for at least 3 days afterwards where possible; some insecticides leave harmful residues for many weeks, and mancozeb and chlorothalonil are highly disruptive.
Release as soon as possible after delivery. If necessary, store tubes on their side for up to 3 days at 10 - 18 °C.
