The DIGI-LUMEN Ballast is a 600 W digital ballast for single-ended HID lighting, and it is the part of the system that decides how hard the lamp is driven. Instead of one fixed output it offers four selectable settings that follow the crop: a low setting for seed raising and clones, a middle setting for vegetative growth or for running lighter on power, full output for flowering, and a Super-Lumen boost above that for enhanced flowering. DIGI-LUMEN designed it for Australian conditions and for stable running where conditions are harsh, so a single ballast can see a crop through from propagation to harvest rather than two units each doing part of the job.
An HID lamp cannot simply be switched on. It needs a ballast to strike the arc, then hold the current steady for as long as the lamp runs. A digital, or electronic, ballast does that with switching electronics rather than the magnetic core and choke of an older transformer-style unit, and that is what makes the output steps possible at all: the operating point is set in electronics rather than fixed by a winding. Because of that, output can also be trimmed between the steps rather than only switched, which is as much about controlling heat as it is about controlling light. Protection is a fast-blow fuse, and spare fuses are supplied with the ballast.
Lamp choice stays open within its rating, since the ballast runs 600 W single-ended metal halide and high-pressure sodium lamps. A grower who prefers metal halide through vegetative growth and high-pressure sodium through flowering can keep the same ballast for both and change only the lamp. Before ordering, check the lamp in hand is a 600 W single-ended type, because that is what this ballast is specified for; double-ended lamps and other wattages belong with ballasts built for them. Keep the spare fuses taped to the ballast or sitting with it rather than loose in a drawer, because a spare is only worth having when it can be found.
