The DIGI-LUMEN Ballast Fuse is the replacement fuse for DIGI-LUMEN digital ballasts, and the reason a ballast that has stopped working is often still a perfectly good ballast. Its job is protection: it guards the ballast against overloads, surges and short circuits, and it is made to give way first so the rest of the ballast does not have to. Fitting a fresh one is ordinary maintenance rather than a repair.
Inside a fuse is a thin metal element chosen to melt at a known current. In normal running it simply passes power through, warming a little and doing nothing else. When the current climbs past what the element can carry, whether from a slow overload or the very fast rise of a short circuit, the element melts and opens the circuit, and the supply stops there until the fuse is changed. The element is consumed in doing that, which is why a fuse is a consumable: it protects once, and then it is replaced rather than reset.
DIGI-LUMEN's 600 W Digital Ballast is protected by a fast-blow fuse and is supplied with spares, so a replacement is usually wanted once those have gone, or kept on the shelf so the next change is a quick one. A fuse that opens once is normal service. A fuse that opens again as soon as it is replaced is pointing at something else in the circuit, most often the lamp, the wiring or the ballast, and that is worth tracing before another fuse goes in.
NOTE: Fit is established for DIGI-LUMEN digital ballasts. Check the fuse rating specified for your ballast before ordering, and fit only a matching replacement.
