Perlite Explained

Those little white balls in almost every potting mix are volcanic glass that's been popped like popcorn. Heat perlite ore past 870°C and the water trapped inside flashes to steam, expanding it up to twenty times into the light, airy pebbles that keep roots breathing. As a desert plant that likes its feet dry, I approve.

This is the full guide to perlite: what it actually is, why growers reach for it, its two honest quirks (yes, it floats, and yes, it crumbles), the dust question answered straight, and how to use it well. It's part of our guide to hydroponic growing media.

What is perlite?

Perlite is a naturally occurring volcanic glass. In its raw state it's an unremarkable grey rock with a little water locked inside it. The magic happens in the factory: when it's heated to somewhere around 870 to 1,090°C (Perlite Institute, 2025), that trapped water flashes to steam and pops the softened glass like a kernel of popcorn. It puffs up to many times its original size, up to about twenty times its volume, into the lightweight white granules you know (USGS, 2021).

Under the hood, each granule is a cluster of tiny sealed glass bubbles, which is what makes perlite so light and so porous. Chemically it's mostly silica, it's inorganic, chemically inert, sterile straight from the bag, and essentially pH-neutral (near 7.0, typically about 6.5-7.5). It doesn't rot, it doesn't break down chemically, and it won't shift your pH much. In the words of one recent review, it's an expanded amorphous volcanic glass that is chemically inert, porous and lightweight (Dzięcioł et al., 2025).

Why growers use perlite: it's all about air

Perlite's whole reason for existing in your pot is aeration. Its porous, popcorn structure creates a network of air pockets, so water drains through freely and oxygen reaches the root zone. Its primary role in soilless mixes is exactly that: adding air when it's blended into water-holding materials like coco, peat or compost (Perlite Institute, n.d.-a).

A few properties follow from that:

  • It drains fast and holds little water. Perlite clings to a thin film of moisture on its surfaces and in its crevices, but it is fundamentally a drainer, not a reservoir. If you need water held, that's a different medium's job.
  • It barely holds nutrients. With almost no capacity to grab and store nutrients, your feed passes straight through. That makes perlite predictable, but it means the medium isn't buffering anything for you.
  • It's neutral, sterile and inert. No pH drama, no pathogens out of the bag, no reactions with your nutrients.
  • It's feather-light. Easy to handle, easy to ship, and it lightens up any mix it goes into.

Put simply, perlite is the medium you add to other media to stop them turning into a waterlogged brick.

Perlite's two quirks (the honest bit)

Perlite is brilliant at its job, but it has two characteristics worth knowing before you buy a bag.

It floats. Perlite is so light that it floats, and it stays buoyant even when saturated. In a flood-and-drain or ebb-and-flow system used on its own, it will wash to the surface and drift around, which is why it's happiest anchored inside a blend rather than run solo in a flooded system.

It's brittle and crushes into fines. Perlite is glass, and glass breaks. With handling, stirring and time, granules crumble into fine dust. That matters for two reasons: the structure you paid for slowly collapses and packs down (so the aeration fades), and those fines are exactly where the dust comes from. It's also why perlite has a limited number of reuse cycles, covered below. This low mechanical stability is a well-known trade-off of the material.

The dust question, answered honestly

Open a dry bag of perlite and you'll get a puff of white dust, and you'll find plenty of alarming talk online about "silica". Here's the accurate version, because it matters.

Perlite is classified by occupational health authorities as a nuisance dust: essentially non-toxic, because it is amorphous (non-crystalline) volcanic glass containing less than 1% crystalline silica (quartz), and it's regulated at the general nuisance-dust exposure limit (NIOSH, n.d.). The serious lung disease people worry about, silicosis, is caused by breathing respirable crystalline silica (quartz) over years in heavy occupational settings like stone-cutting, sandblasting and mining (OSHA, n.d.). That is a genuinely different exposure from a gardener opening a bag of perlite on the weekend.

So the honest bottom line: perlite dust is very unlikely to cause you a serious lung disease. But it is still a fine dust, and breathing any fine dust irritates your eyes, nose and throat. The sensible move is simple: dampen the perlite before you handle it, and pop on a basic dust mask. Not out of fear, just for comfort and common sense.

Spike's Tip: Give the bag a light misting before you scoop. Damp perlite doesn't throw dust, mixes into your media more evenly, and it's far more pleasant to work with. A two-second spray saves you a sneezing fit and a cloud of white on the potting bench.

How to use perlite

In a mix (its natural home). Perlite shines blended into a water-holding medium to open it up and keep it airy. The classic is the 70/30 coco-perlite blend that most hobby growers reach for (see our coco coir guide). In general potting mixes, something in the range of 10 to 30% perlite is typical. The rule of thumb: pair perlite (air) with a genuine water-holder, and let each do its job.

Match the grade to the task. Perlite comes in grades from coarse to fine. Coarse grades give the most aeration and drainage and resist packing down, which suits chunky mixes and larger containers. Finer grades hold a touch more moisture and are handy for seed-starting and propagation. Bigger particles, more air; smaller particles, more water.

Propagation. Perlite is a favourite for striking cuttings, on its own or in a blend, because it's airy, sterile and holds just enough moisture around the base of a cutting without drowning it.

On its own. Perlite can be used solo in some setups, but between its floating and its low water-holding, it earns its keep as a component far more often than as a standalone medium in a typical home system.

Reusing perlite

Because it's inert and sterile, perlite is reusable for several cycles: rinse it, sterilise it (heat or a hydrogen peroxide soak both suit an inert mineral like perlite), and check it still has structure before it goes back to work. The catch is the crushing. Every cycle turns more of your granules into fines, so the aeration gradually fades. Retire a batch once it's more dust than granule. Perlite and the environment (the honest version)

Perlite is a mixed bag environmentally, and it's worth being straight about both sides.

The marks against it. Perlite is a mined mineral, so it's non-renewable: the volcanic glass formed over geological time and doesn't replenish on any human timescale. It isn't biodegradable either, so at the end of its life it simply persists, though because perlite is inert and non-toxic (Dzięcioł et al., 2025) that is a matter of landfill space rather than of anything harmful it leaves behind. And expanding it takes energy, because that popcorn trick needs a very hot furnace.

The marks in its favour. The reserves are enormous. The global perlite industry actively mines a total of less than 3 square miles (roughly 8 km²) at any time, according to the Perlite Institute (from a 2010 survey of producers), a tiny fraction of known reserves, so supply isn't the pressing concern it is for peat (Perlite Institute, n.d.-b). Mining impact is relatively contained: the US Geological Survey notes perlite mining is generally in remote areas and its environmental impact is not severe, with fines and overburden used to reclaim the mined-out sites (USGS, 2021). Perlite is inert and non-toxic and doesn't leach anything nasty, it's very light so it ships efficiently, and it's reusable.

The verdict. Perlite is a middling, honest choice: not a renewable, compostable option like coco coir or rice hulls, but not a heavy-impact material either. The best ways to shrink its footprint are the obvious ones: blend it to make a little go a long way, and reuse it until it's genuinely spent.

Frequently asked questions

Does perlite hold water or drain it?

Mostly it drains. Perlite holds a thin film of moisture on its surfaces, but its real job is aeration and drainage, not water storage. If you want water held in the root zone, pair it with a water-retaining medium.

Is perlite dust dangerous?

Perlite is classed as a nuisance dust and is essentially non-toxic, with under 1% crystalline silica, so it doesn't carry the silicosis risk associated with high-crystalline-silica dusts (that comes from crystalline silica in heavy industrial settings). It's still a fine dust, though, so dampen it and wear a simple mask to avoid irritation.

Can I use perlite on its own?

You can in some systems, but it floats and holds little water, so in most home setups it works best blended into a water-holding medium rather than run solo.

What's the difference between perlite and vermiculite?

Can I reuse perlite?

Yes, several times, as long as you rinse and sterilise it between grows. Just retire it once it has crumbled into mostly fine dust, because by then the aeration is gone.

How much perlite should I add to a mix?

For general potting mixes, 10 to 30% is a common range. The popular coco blend runs about 70% coco coir to 30% perlite. More perlite means more air and faster drainage; less means more water retention.
