How to Reuse and Sterilise Growing Media
That sack of used clay pebbles in the corner of the shed is worth money, and tipping it in the bin feels like a waste. It mostly is. Reusing your growing media saves cash and keeps material out of landfill, but it isn't as simple as pouring last grow's pots into a fresh one. Used media hangs onto old salts, old roots, and sometimes the pathogens that were quietly building up all season. Done right, reuse is a genuine win. Done carelessly, it's how you serve last season's root rot to a brand-new crop.
This is the practical guide to getting a second life out of your media without importing last grow's problems: which media are worth reusing, how to clean and sterilise them properly, and, the part most guides skip, when to just bin it. It's part of our guide to hydroponic growing media. As a cactus, I take a dim view of sharing my pot with anyone's leftover fungi, so let's do this properly.

Why reuse media (and the honest catch)
The upside is cost and waste. Some media, clay pebbles especially, reuse for years, which makes them far cheaper over the long run and keeps them out of the bin (Diara et al., 2012). The professional world is heading the same way: reusing spent substrate to cut cost and carbon is now an active field known as circular horticulture, and research shows reuse can genuinely lower a growing system's carbon footprint (Hu et al., 2025; Barrett et al., 2016).
The catch is real, though. Reuse is not risk-free. Peer-reviewed work has shown that pathogenic fungi, including the culprits behind wilts and root rots, accumulate progressively with each reuse (Hu et al., 2025, in a peat-based strawberry substrate; indicative). That's exactly why many commercial growers don't reuse at all. For the home grower, reuse is a sensible cost-and-sustainability choice, but the whole game is doing it safely. Which comes down to two jobs.
What you're actually dealing with
Used media has two problems, and each has a fix.
- Salts. Old media holds leftover nutrient salts. Plant into that and the high EC can burn your new crop, seedlings most of all. The fix is to flush thoroughly and check the runoff EC.
- Life. Old roots, and potentially pathogens and pests. The fix is to remove the roots, then sterilise or pasteurise.
Those two problems map neatly onto the three steps below: recondition, sterilise, then verify before replanting.
Which media are worth reusing
Not all media reward reuse equally.
- Clay pebbles (LECA): the champion. Rinse, sterilise, dry, and they go for years and many cycles. At the end of their life they still earn their keep dug into garden soil for aeration.
- Perlite: reusable for several cycles if rinsed, but it's brittle and crushes into fines with handling, so its aeration slowly fades. Note too that research on reused perlite found pathogen populations built up, so sterilise it rather than just rinsing.
- Coco: two to three cycles before it decomposes, and it needs re-buffering each time (see our coco coir guide and buffering guide).
- Rockwool: mostly a single-use story, with one catch. Propagation cubes are effectively single-use, but denser slabs can be steam-sterilised and reused for around three to four years (Thakulla et al., 2021). It's non-biodegradable and awkward to dispose of, so plenty of growers retire it after a single crop regardless, and you shouldn't mix it with other media because it can't be separated afterward.
- Vermiculite: limited. It's soft, and it compresses and breaks down.
- Growstones and specialty media: debris tends to lodge in the pores and can be hard to clear, so judge case by case and lean toward caution.
Step 1: recondition (clean and flush)
Pull the plant and remove as much of the old root mass and debris as you can by hand. Then rinse and flush the media with clean water to wash out the leftover salts. Check the runoff EC as you go and keep flushing until it drops to a low, safe level.
For coco, this is also when you re-buffer, because coco that has started to break down exposes fresh exchange sites that will grab calcium and magnesium all over again (the buffering guide covers exactly how).
Step 2: sterilise (deal with what's left)
Here's the distinction worth knowing: pasteurising versus sterilising.
- Pasteurising uses moderate moist heat, roughly 60 to 82°C for 30 minutes or more, to kill most pathogens while leaving some beneficial microbes alive.
- Sterilising goes hotter still, to boiling point (around 100°C) and above, and kills essentially everything.
Hotter isn't automatically better. Fully sterilising leaves a biological vacuum that a stray pathogen can recolonise unopposed, so for reuse, pasteurising is often the smarter target. In the peer-reviewed strawberry trial, steaming the substrate to around 70°C for an hour was enough to curb the pathogen build-up (Hu et al., 2025).
Heat methods (best for mineral media):
- Boiling or a hot-water soak: ideal for clay pebbles. The sealed-bucket trick works well: pour boiling water over the media in a bucket, put the lid on, and let it hold its heat for a few hours as it slowly cools.
- Oven: spread mineral media on a tray and warm it in a low oven (around 90°C) long enough to hold roughly 80°C for 30 minutes. Hotter is not better, it just risks scorching, and never oven-bake organic media like coco, which smoulders and smells foul.
- Steam: handy for larger volumes.
- Solarisation: seal damp media in black plastic bags in full sun for a few weeks. Free and low-tech, but slow and weather-dependent.
Chemical methods:
- Hydrogen peroxide: soak the media in a 3% solution (ordinary household strength) for around 20 to 30 minutes to oxidise organic gunk and surface pathogens, then rinse. Wear gloves and eye protection when handling the concentrate, and never mix it with vinegar or other cleaners.
- Bleach: a dilute solution (roughly one part household bleach to nine parts water, about a 10% dilution) sanitises mineral media, but rinse it out thoroughly and let it air before replanting, because chlorine residue harms roots. Wear gloves, work in good ventilation, and never mix bleach with other cleaners or with hydrogen peroxide.
Match the method to the medium: heat or peroxide for clay pebbles, peroxide for most others, and never heat-treat organic media.
Step 3: recondition and verify before replanting
Dry your clay pebbles (or keep media damp) as appropriate, then re-check EC and pH, and re-buffer coco. Only replant once everything is back in range. It's a five-minute check that saves a whole crop.
Spike's Tip: After a sick crop, when in doubt, throw it out. If your last grow had root rot, wilt or damping-off, bin the media rather than gambling a whole new crop on a sterilisation being perfect. Media is cheap. A repeat outbreak that costs you a season is not.
When NOT to reuse
Sometimes the right call is fresh media. Don't reuse:
- After a diseased crop. Root rot, wilt, damping-off, or any viral or fungal disease. Some pathogens are stubborn, and the research shows they accumulate over reuse, so start fresh.
- When the media has broken down. Coco turned to mush, perlite crushed to dust, or clay pebbles with pores clogged by salt that won't rinse clear.
- Anything that fell on the floor during potting. Treat it as contaminated.
Frequently asked questions
Can I reuse clay pebbles forever?
Practically, for years and many cycles, as long as you clean and sterilise them between grows and the pores haven't become permanently salt-clogged. When they finally give up, retire them into garden soil for aeration.
Is rinsing enough, or do I have to sterilise?
Rinsing fixes salts, not pathogens. If your last crop was healthy and low-risk, a thorough rinse and dry may be enough, but to be safe, especially after any sign of disease, sterilise or pasteurise as well.
Hydrogen peroxide or heat?
Both work. Heat (boiling or steam) suits mineral media like clay pebbles; a 3% hydrogen peroxide soak is easier for larger batches and needs no heat source. Don't heat-treat organic media.
Can I reuse media after root rot?
No. Bin it and start fresh. It's the one situation where reuse simply isn't worth the risk.
Can I reuse rockwool?
It depends on the form. Propagation cubes are effectively single-use, but denser slabs can be steam-sterilised and reused for around three to four years (Thakulla et al., 2021). It's non-biodegradable and awkward to dispose of, so many growers treat it as single-use regardless, and it shouldn't be mixed with other media.
How do I know it's still good?
It holds its structure (not mush or dust), it flushes down to a low EC, and it came off a healthy crop. If any of those three fail, replace it.
