Bugs for Bugs Fruit Fly Lure
Bugs for Bugs Fruit Fly Lure is an autolysed protein attractant for Queensland and Mediterranean fruit flies. It forms the food-attractant part of a protein bait spray, drawing adult flies to feed on treated spots. The lure must be combined with a compatible registered insecticide to make an attract-and-kill bait; it is not an insecticide on its own.
Protein baiting targets a useful point in the fruit fly life cycle: females need a protein meal before they can sting fruit. Small deposits on foliage or the trunk give flies somewhere to find that food. The mixture is applied as a coarse spot or band, rather than as a cover spray, and fresh bait is applied regularly through the period when fruit is vulnerable.
A consistent programme is more useful than waiting for damage to appear. Start before fruit becomes susceptible, keep up the treatment interval and renew deposits after rain. During wet weather or high pressure, applications are made twice weekly. Fruit inspections and male-trap monitoring remain part of the programme, alongside removal of residual fruit and other sanitation work.
The protein can be mixed with Bugs for Bugs Thickener to improve how the bait weathers in the field. Prepare the thickened water ahead of time, then add the protein and the selected toxicant on the day of application. Both the chosen insecticide label and the lure label govern the final mix and the crops it may be used on.
NOTE: Protein bait may burn sensitive fruit, especially mangoes. Minimise fruit contact, test a small area if unsure and use the lower protein rate for sensitive crops. The lure does not replace the insecticide component of the bait.
Bring fruit flies to the bait before they reach the fruit.

Dilution Rate
- Protein bait: 1 - 2 L Fruit Fly Lure per 100 L water, with a compatible insecticide at its own label rate. Use the lower protein rate in sensitive crops.
- Coarse spot or band spray: 8 - 15 L of mixture per ha.
Application
- Check the label of the compatible insecticide for the crop, pest, state, rate and withholding period before mixing.
- If using Bugs for Bugs Thickener, mix it into the water 24 hours before adding the protein where possible. Add the lure and toxicant on the day of application and use the mixture fresh that day.
- Apply as a coarse spot or band to the foliage or trunks of host plants. Do not use as a cover spray and do not apply bait to the ground or grass.
- Begin 2 weeks before fruit becomes susceptible and continue until at least 3 weeks after harvest. Apply every 5 - 7 days, or twice weekly in wet weather or under high pressure. Reapply after rain.
- Maintain male-trap monitoring, regular crop inspections and sanitation, with MAT as a complementary part of Queensland fruit fly management.
Safety
Avoid fruit contact, because protein bait may cause fruit burn. Test a small area first if unsure. Follow all safety and withholding instructions on the chosen insecticide label.
Avoid skin and eye contact; wear safety glasses and suitable protective gloves and clothing. Do not contaminate the container, and reseal it after use.
If the product enters the eyes, flush immediately with running water for at least 10 minutes. Wash skin with non-abrasive soap and water; seek medical attention if irritation persists, and wash clothing before reuse. If swallowed, rinse the mouth, do not induce vomiting, give a glass of water and seek medical advice.
Refrigeration is recommended; store at 0 - 4 °C for optimum activity.
